The amount of a dividend is generally a part of a company’s profit and is called the dividend payout ratio. Each dividend involves three dates including a Record Date, ex dividend date and date payable. The Record Date is usually 5.00pm on the date a company closes its share register in order to find out which shareholders are entitled to receive the most recently declared dividend. All changes to registration details are required to be finalized on this date.

The ex dividend date occurs a couple of business days prior to the company’s Record Date. Investors who wish to be entitled to a dividend must have purchased the shares ahead of the ex dividend date. If you bought shares on or following that date, the previous owner of the shares (and not you) will be the one to receive the dividend. The Date Payable is simply the date on which a company’s dividend is distributed among its investors. Below discussed stocks are set to go ex-dividend on Monday.
