Boeing (NYSE:BA) and BMW shakes hand to recycle carbon fiber scrap

The Boeing Company (NYSE:BA) and German luxury auto maker BMW AG shared plans related to the use of lightweight carbon fiber to reduce the amount of fossil fuel consumed by their own products. They also share views regarding a common problem: How to recycle carbon fiber scrap.

Both the company stated yesterday, they will conduct a joint research on how to recycle carbon fiber and automate the process.

According to the company’s statement, its latest 787 Dreamliner aircraft is approximately 50% carbon fiber material.BMW intends to introduce in the second half of 2013 the first of a planned line of electric automobiles with passenger compartments that also made out of carbon fiber.

Just like other automakers, BMW is also pinched to carbon fiber because it provides the strength of steel but is noticeably lighter, which helps to get better fuel economy. It also makes a separate joint venture with SGL Group to produce carbon fiber components for its cars.

At the close of the trading day, The Boeing Company (NYSE:BA) shares fell -0.46% to settle at $75.47. Intraday trading was between $75.26 – $76.04.  In the past year, the stock has traded within a range of $66.82 – $77.83. The last session’s volume of 5.19 million shares was up from the average daily trading volume of 4.67 million shares.

Embraer SA (ADR) (NYSE:ERJ) shares were down -1.38% to close at $25.81. The stock traded between $25.65 – $26.11 during the last trading session.  In the last 12 months the shares have traded between $22.57 and $35.55. The last session’s volume of 1.03 million shares was a bit higher than their average daily trading volume of 922,045 shares.

Lockheed Martin Corporation (NYSE:LMT) shares in the last session were down -0.21% closing at $91.81. The stock traded in a range of $91.69 – $92.75.  In the last year the stock has moved within a range of $76.02 – $95.92. The last session’s volume of 1.51 million shares was lower from their average daily trading volume of 1.71 million shares.

Another rival company Spirit AeroSystems Holdings, Inc. (NYSE:SPR), traded up +1.06% moving to $16.14. Intraday trading recorded the stock price in a range between $16.03– $16.31.  In the previous 52 weeks the price has traded between $13.96 – $26.00. The last session’s volume of 1.64 shares was up from their average daily trading volume of 2.19 million shares.
